About Nepal

Located in Central Asia, Nepal is one of the world's poorest developing nations. Bordering India, and Tibetan China, Nepal is home to 8 of the ten highest mountain peaks in the world, most famously Mount Evererst. Once the only officially Hindu state in the world, Nepal was declared a secular country in 2006. Heavily influenced by its Indian neighbour to the south, 80% of the more than 27,000,000 Nepalis are Hindu, but Tibetan Buddhism has also been a strong influence. The current Dalai Lama was born here, and there remain many Tibetan refugees in Nepal to this day.

Nepal was a Constitutional Monarchy, however since 1996 Communist Maoists seeking to replace the parliamentary system with a socialist republic have led a civil war that has so far claimed over 12,000 lives. The King supended Parliament in 2005, declaring a State of Emergency. In 2006 the King appointed a Prime Minister and the Government of Nepal and the Communist Party of Nepal made a peace agreement, reinstating Parliament while adopting an interim constitution and interim government. Nevertheless, three bombs were detonated in Kathmandu in September of 2007, causing several fatalities and injuries. Much of Nepal's economy relies on tourism, which has been in decline given the current political uncertainty.
